DESCRIPTION:This training is required for persons wishing to serve as an education advocate, and for parents who wish to learn about their rights.\n\n\nThere are more than 900 Kansas children and youth with disabilities whose parents are unknown, unavailable or whose parental rights have been terminated.\n\n\nThese children and youth need someone like you to represent them in special education matters!\nThe Kansas State Department of Education has contracted with Families Together, Inc. to coordinate the Education Advocate Program. Education Advocates “step into the role” of the parent in special education matters and advocate for the child/student. Advocates should be willing to assert their rights as the legal educational decision maker and effectively advocate for the student while working to build a strong school team around the student.\nThis training will also count as the yearly refresher training for current education advocates.\nFor more information, contact: Lisa ( mailto:lisa@familiestogetherinc.org ) or call the Topeka Center at (785) 233-4777.\n
